China’s famous dissident Fang Lizhi died on April 6, 2012. I had the privilege of bringing a group of students to meet with Dr. Fang on a visit to Beijing in 1989, while I was teaching for the “Semester at Sea” program. Just a couple months later, I returned to Beijing, where I had a “front row” view of the early phases of the demonstrations that occurred in and around Tiananmen Square. Fang’s death inspired me to search my hard drive for my old scanned photos and an article that I wrote in 1990 based on my experiences with him and in China during the demonstrations.
