Major Projects
- Scale Model Solar Systems: Proposed the idea and served as co-I in developing The Colorado Scale Model Solar System in Boulder, CO and the Voyage Scale Model Solar System on the National Mall in Washington, DC, which is now a national program for model solar systems run through the National Center for Earth and Space Science Education.
- Story Time From Space: After Dr. Bennett’s books were selected for the first launch of the Story Time From Space program, he joined the Story Time From Space team to work on further development of this project that combines literacy, science, and real space travel.
- The Totality App: Created the only free app that provides fully interactive, high-resolution maps (using the eclipse code of Xavier Jubier) for upcoming solar eclipses, along with educational background about eclipses. In 2022, he donated the app to the American Astronomical Society.
- Public Understanding of Global Warming: Teaching about this important topic since the 1980s, including developing the free web site globalwarmingprimer.com, writing books on the topic both for adults (A Global Warming Primer) and children (The Wizard Who Saved the World), traveling widely to speak on the topic, and working closely with other scientists, including helping to write the statement on climate change for Astronomers for Planet Earth.
- Middle School Science: Developing a free, online digital “textbook” for middle school Earth and Space Science, posted at grade8science.com.
- NASA Education: During 2 years as a Visiting Senior Scientist at NASA Headquarters (Washington, DC), led the creation of educational programs including: The Initiative to Develop Education through Astronomy (IDEA), which began the ongoing tradition of incorporating education and outreach into a NASA science missions and research; Flight Opportunities for Science Teacher Development (FOSTER), which initially flew teachers aboard the Kuiper Airborne Observatory and later aboard the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA); Perspectives from Space, a program Dr. Bennett proposed and developed to show the way space affects humanity, and which was then chosen as the global theme for International Space Year; Ask an Astronomer, a program that brought professional astronomers to NSTA and other meetings to answer questions from teachers.
- Curriculum Development for Quantitative Reasoning: Led creation of the Quantitative Reasoning program at the University of Colorado, one of the first (possibly the first) such programs in the nation. Also lead author of the first and best-selling textbook for this subject (Using and Understanding Mathematics — A Quantitative Reasoning Approach).
- Additional Curriculum Development: Extensive curriculum development in astronomy for elementary school (the Our Future in Space program) and college (embodied in The Cosmic Perspective textbook series), as well as other science curricula embodied in the books and web site noted.
- Teacher Training: Numerous teacher workshops including being a featured presenter for the National Teacher of the Year Program in 2011, plus many presentations at meetings including the National Science Teachers Association, Space Exploration Educators Conferences, Colorado Chapter of the International Reading Association, and many more.
